Termites!

Termite damage to an oil paintingA painting being done for a very, very patient customer was left hanging in a storeroom for a while. Instead of being hung from rails, as usual, it was pinned to a board. This proved to be a costly mistake.

The board had a termite problem. So, the painting also had a termite problem.

The termites had eaten a hole through the canvas, and the painting is ruined. We quickly checked the rest of the studios, and found termites had re-established themselves almost everywhere. It’s going to cost us a small fortune to fix, and we’re going to have to treat the empty building and gardens next door as well. We’ll work around the disruption, but the whole thing has been a real eye-opener for me. Being from the UK I’d had no idea about the damage termites can do.
