Monet painting breaks auction records!

The Claude Monet painting “Le basin aux nympheas”, seen in public just once in the last 80 years, smashed the previous record of 20.9 million pounds ($41.2 million) when it sold for 41 million pounds ($80.7 million) to a telephone bidder at Christie’s in London.

One of a series of water-lily paintings, this one was described as being the best of the bunch. The auction as a whole exceeded expectations by a large margin, with bidders from oil-rich Russia and the Middle East believed responsible for pushing the prices so high.
